Argentina

High-altitude vineyards under the Andes, and the home of Malbec.

Wine history

Spanish colonists planted the first vines in the sixteenth century, and Italian and Spanish immigration in the nineteenth built a huge domestic industry. Export focus arrived in the 1990s with modern winemaking and the realisation that Mendoza's altitude — often above 1,000 metres — gives Malbec colour, freshness and perfume.
