Georgia

Eight thousand years of continuous winemaking in clay qvevri.

Wine history

The oldest chemical evidence of grape wine anywhere comes from Georgian pottery dated to around 6000 BCE. Winemaking in buried qvevri has continued uninterrupted ever since and is recognised by UNESCO; Georgia's amber, skin-fermented whites are the direct ancestors of today's orange wine movement.
