Wine history

Roman Lusitania grew vines widely, but Portugal's modern identity was forged by the 1703 Methuen Treaty, which sent fortified Douro wine to Britain in vast quantity. In 1756 the Douro became one of the first demarcated wine regions in the world. Today its dry reds and Atlantic whites are as celebrated as its Port.
